The Antiques and the ruins of Glanum
There is a mausoleum to Julius dating 30-20BC and there
is a triumphal arch dated 20AD decorated with Caesar’s
conquest celebrations, all this in such a perfect condition:
one of the best preserved Roman buildings in the world.
Across the road from the Antiques you’ll find the ruins
of GLANUM: where excavations began in 1921, a site
notable for his long history dating from the 6th BC to the
3rd of our own era. Its exemplary town plan and important
religious and civil monuments are the defining features of
this splendid archaeological site.
Les Baux De Provence, the village is perched on a 245 m
high rocky spur overlooking the plains scattered with olive groves
and olive oil mills– you’ll be able to taste the fruitiest olive oil –.
A natural fortress anchored on the southern slopes of the
Alpilles Hills, the site was occupied since the
Neolithic Age (around 6000BC)!!!
This place was inhabited over the centuries and became
residence of Lords, Barons and Counts, even a Marquisate
of the Prince of Monaco.
To day, the ruins are coming back to life and the legends
of history whisper in the restored walls.
